Mindfulness

unsplash-image-DFtjXYd5Pto.jpg

My brain is constantly on the go at all times, I find it so hard to focus on one task and struggle with connecting because of that.

Connecting during conversations, while listening to music or a podcast, during meals, connecting mind to muscle, making these connections take mindfulness which I definitely need to work on.

Call it ADHD I don’t know I’m not a doctor, but I know there are certain aspects I need to change and small steps I need to take to create those connections and be more open and mindful.

I am sure a lot of people feel this way so knowing how to create new habits and dial in on the details can be so beneficial for your everyday life.

For starters, I would love to remember more of the fine details throughout the day that I discover during my interactions but I typically forget because I am not as focused as I should be.

Now along with some sort of attention deficit disorder you are probably thinking I have short term memory loss too but I promise I am not crazy,

I just need to CONNECT.

Passing conversations are the worst especially during a workday when you are interacting with lots of people, it is easy to have those quick “hi how are you” conversations and responses because they are not meaningful, they’re just polite.

That may be blunt but it is true, how many people a day are you intentionally having a conversation with where you learn new information and engage in the details?

For me, that probably happens once or twice with a customer during 8 hours of my work day, and then a few hours later when I am home and someone asks me how my day was.

Not very many which means the deeper conversations that are being had need to be mindful, even if it’s not noticeable right then,

it is crucial for mental health to have intentional interactions.

I also personally find it offensive when I can tell the other person I am speaking with is not engaged or really paying attention to what I am saying, head nods and one worded answers usually make it obvious.

Knowing the way that makes me feel on the receiving end gives me even more of a reason to ensure I don’t make anyone feel that way either.

Some days I want to talk your ear off, other days I can’t be bothered to have a conversation but you never know what customer really needs to talk to someone, or a family member is in need of some advice, there are situations that may need more responses and I am trying to work on that.

Like I said, mindfulness is shown in many aspects of life and for me a big part is during exercise and movement.

You have probably heard of “mind to muscle” connection which means engaging the muscles you are working during each exercise to ensure your form is correct, and to get the best results.

There have been plenty of days where I was dreading my workout the whole day and once I got to the gym I was completely checked out and unmotivated. Scrolling through social media during my 30 minute walk on the treadmill then picking the lowest weight  for each exercise and performing them as fast as I could just to get out of there.

There is no mindfulness during those sessions, no improvement and horrible form, which will get me nowhere in the long wrong.

First of all, I should be thankful for any movement that I can get because it is so beneficial for my mind, body, and soul even when I feel like sitting on the couch all day.

Second, my muscles are definitely not getting a good stretch or workout when I half ass it and not connecting my mind to movements, and my bad form can lead to injuries that are easily preventable.

Each individual exercise should be performed with intentional and mindfulness which I continue to work on every day and something I encourage you all to practice as well.

A simple walk or 10 minute stretch requires some sort of engagement no matter how big or small, I promise you will notice a difference when you become more engaged in everything you do.

The most important part of life that we should be practicing mindfulness for is while eating.

Does that sound as weird to you as it did to me when I first read about this?

You don’t typically have in-depth thoughts while you are eating dinner, or at least I never did but it is actually extremely important to connect during meals.

You should be conscious about every piece of food you bring up to your mouth, how you are chewing it, swallowing it, and how it makes you feel when you are finished.

I can easily snack on a bag of chips but all of the sudden I reach the bottom of the bag because I was so focused on the Netflix show I was watching. I didn’t notice any cues that I was full and also didn’t realize I was going to finish off the whole bag.

Now don’t get me wrong, chips are one of my favorite snacks and so delicious but if I am mindfully eating them I will notice I only need a certain amount to feel satisfied instead of overindulging.

These are all small things that we typically don’t think of and might sound tedious, but they really are important to be aware of.

Having dinner at a table instead of on the couch or in a recliner is a great way to be more mindful while eating as well as eating with company vs. staring at a screen during your meal.

Believe it or not, eating intentionally can also help with digestion because like I mentioned, chewing slower allows your body to swallow and digest not as suddenly as it would if you are scarfing something down.

Small changes have big impact, so trying to create these connections where you can even in a minor aspect can be beneficial.

Next time you are feeling unmotivated or unhappy, try to tap into your intentions and go into a task with mindfulness.

I hope these tips and sharing my personal experiences can help you gain clarity on the changes you are making on your journey to the best version of yourself.

Fit Bar's Current Favorites

Untitled design (51).png

Excuse me, where did the month of March go!? I swear I was just looking forward to celebrating my birthday and talking about the first day of Spring and BAM, both of those have already passed. It’s almost like every month goes by quicker and quicker.

I thought for this week I would share a couple of not only my favorites that we offer at the cafes but, some of our best selling products at Fit Bar that you all NEED to try!

Everything from coffee, supplements, savory eats, and on the go products, you name it, we got it.

I can confidently say that I have tried every single item on our menu in the past two plus years that I have worked at the Fit Bar, and none of them disappoint.

As the seasons change, so do our food preferences which makes it so fun and interesting to see what bowls are the most popular during each month, and what smoothies are flying out the door more than others, along with coffee and supplements.

Although our Brazilian bowl which is a CLASSIC, will always be our best seller, the Pitaya Twist and Zen bowl are a close second at least during this past month.

The Pitaya Twist is perfect for when the sun is out because it is so tropical and tart it brings hints of summer, and not to mention the vibrant pink color base and bright yellow pineapple on top. This bowl is becoming more and more popular by the day and one that should definitely be on your list to try.

The Zen bowl is one of my favorites because of the combination of acai AND pitaya in one bowl, amazing right!? You get the best of both worlds which is nice when you are as indecisive as I am, plus the raspberries, strawberries, and cacao nibs (just a few of the toppings) are foods that I eat daily so it is in my top few favorites for sure.

These bowls are both packed with superfoods that boost your immune system, provide antioxidants, and obviously taste delicious.

The pitaya in both bowls provides a lot of nutrients and the fresh fruit on top, and the cacao nibs sprinkled on top of the Zen bowl are rich in iron, magnesium, healthy fats, and fiber.

You can pretty much count on all of our menu items to carry nutritional benefits but let’s be honest, everyone is hooked on the flavors so those benefits are the icing on the cake.

Smoothies are so popular because they are a great on the go meal that is healthy and beats stopping by McDonald’s for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Our Green Machine smoothie is extremely popular year around, but most recently as the weather has warmed up, everyone is wanting their daily dose of greens in a refreshing and tasty smoothie.

This is technically the closest thing to a juice that we offer at the cafes (for now… house fresh pressed juice will be coming soon!), but we use whole fruits and vegetables in order to keep all of the nutrients in the drink, while still being light.

Freshly squeezed lemon, ginger, coconut water, avocado, cucumber, and pear make up this drink and is the perfect combination of sweet and tart, while boosting the immune system.

You can also easily add a scoop of plant-based protein to this smoothie for a more filling option, especially if you are drinking it in place of a meal to keep you fuller for longer. This happens to be one of my go to’s during the week as a midday pick-me-up while fueling my body with nutrients.

Coffee.jpg

I saved the best two, in my opinion, for last because they are staples in my diet, and seem to be in everyone else's this past month too.

Coffee of course is a must every single day but sometimes it is good to switch it up and keep it interesting, in this case our signature Mexican Mocha is a daily favorite.

It is a twist on a classic latte, with a mushroom cacao mix to mimic the mocha without artificial sweeteners and syrups and is offered iced or hot.

For those who love the traditional mocha or any other classic coffee drinks that are typically sweetened with syrup or sugar, we offer honey or agave to sweeten up the drink to avoid refined sugars.

The Mexican Mocha iced is one of the BEST items on our menu, bold claim I know, but it is seriously an amazing option for your morning caffeine fix and pairs well with another classic, avocado toast.

It is crazy how something so basic is so delicious, I will never understand but I will also never stop eating it. I can confidently say avocado toast is one of Fit Bar’s best sellers, organic sourdough, extra virgin olive oil, mashed avocado, and hemp hearts make up the perfect combination for any time of the day.

Again it pairs well with not only coffee, but smoothies or a mini acai bowl making it the perfect savory addition.

All of this food talk makes me hungry and excited to see what favorites will come out of the next month and the month after that.

Seeing the customers' favorites inspires me to try some options that I wouldn’t normally choose because they are obviously best sellers for a reason, and who knows they may become my favorites too.

Stop by any Fit Bar cafe to try any of these favorites along with so much more we have to offer, find out what your go-to bowl, smoothie, or coffee drink is this month!

Recovery is KEY!

unsplash-image-amgv9YUg-MA.jpg

I started gymnastics when I was about 7 or 8 and continued for a few years competing and practicing, but unfortunately my flexibility did not carry over into my adult years.

I have always been very active and played multiple sports throughout middle school, junior high, high school, and even recreational teams the past couple of years. Lucky for me, I have never been severely injured or pulled any major muscles, but it wasn’t until I started working out regularly that I realized just how important stretching and recovery is.

Warm ups, cool downs, mobility, stretching, active rest days, and even yoga are essential to preventing injuries and making sure your form is always on point.

Warming up before any physical activity can help loosen your muscles and decrease the chance of any injuries because you aren’t just jumping into any sudden movements.

Warm ups can be anything from light stretching to walking, jogging, or bodyweight exercises.

I highly emphasize the “light” in light stretching because again, any sudden movements or over extension especially if that is one of your first movements of the day, can lead to pulled muscles and other injuries. I recommend deep stretching after your workout while all your muscles are warm, this way you can increase flexibility and even improve your form while working out.

I personally start off every single workout with an incline walk on the treadmill, the stair stepper on leg day, or a walk outside if it’s nice out. Then I follow that with light mobility training which is all bodyweight, and once I finish my workout I will get into more deep stretching and isolation stretching.

I cannot stress enough how much incorporating all of these extra recovery sessions have helped me manage pain, form, and flexibility and just in the last couple of weeks!

I have low back pain that I experience often and especially while weight lifting if my form is not perfect and a lot of that comes from inflexibility. My range of motion increased with the more yoga, basic stretching, and mobility exercises I did which then helped with my form while working out so now any back pain I have is easily fixed with form.

I had no idea where to start when it came to stretching because I have only ever known the basic touch your toes and arm stretches so I was determined to find better ones. There are SO many free videos and pictures that are out there of stretches for all levels and all goals so I started browsing YouTube and ended up loving these 10 minute full body yoga flows and stretches.

Not only are they 10 minutes (who doesn’t have 10 minutes???) but the yoga aspect focuses on breathing and mind to muscle connection which is amazing and so rewarding. They challenge me in the best ways and are perfect to incorporate into your morning or nighttime routine, or add into your gym session, wherever you feel fits best in your schedule.

I promise you will feel the difference in your everyday movements and notice the increase in flexibility. Even on rest days, a nice walk and stretching routine feels so amazing while providing proper recovery for your muscles so that you are ready to dominate your next workout.

Besides YouTube, you can find video clips and step by step guides on other social media platforms of recovery sessions, mobility moves, and stretching routines. Fit Bar has loads of knowledgeable employees and personal trainers that are accessible through their Instagram that can help you find the perfect moves to increase flexibility and boost recovery.

You can also download our App Bar Code Collective, for guided movement, tips, general health and wellness challenges, information, and to connect with our Health Coaches!

Not only does recovery come from types of movement, it comes from the way that you take care of your body in all aspects including sleep, nutrition, and stress management so once all of those things are aligned you will have optimal recovery and see all of the benefits.

If you are constantly exhausted and not getting seven to eight hours of sleep every night, your body will consistently be trying to play catch up so how do you expect it to properly recover?

Same goes with nutrition, if you are putting garbage into your body, how do you expect it to function properly when it is lacking necessary nutrients?

All of this leads to no energy and higher stress levels so I encourage you to evaluate what your training and recovery looks like and add in the proper steps to recover whenever needed.

Start with a five minute stretching routine and see where that takes you because I know it will only be up!
