Is Motivation A Myth?

If you are like me and beg for snow to make an appearance around Christmas time yet complain anytime you have to go outside or drive somewhere, you probably know how I’ve been feeling the last couple of weeks. I actually do love the snow but I hate being cold. So unless I am inside in the heat curled up with a good book while the snow is falling outside, I am unmotivated and pretty much useless. It is so so hard to be consistent during the winter months but I feel emotionally, physically, and mentally put together when I have a routine and am consistent. Believe me, I am the first to find any excuse to stay home all day, but I find that my motivation increases when I am more active, eating well, and making time for my health.

MOTIVATION could be made up, it could be nonexistent, it could be the reason you accomplish anything, it is still up for debate, but it all depends on how you view the word and what it means to you personally. In my experience, I think it is impossible to rely solely on the feeling of motivation because oftentimes it isn’t there, meaning you have to come up with some yourself. My motivation to go to the gym comes from knowing how much clearer and focused I will feel after the gym. My motivation to eat well 90% of the time comes from knowing I am fueling my body with nutritious foods but still honoring my cravings when I feel like it. My motivation to clean my apartment comes from knowing I can relax on the couch when I am done and admire the cleanliness and the feeling of accomplishment. You may notice the pattern with my motivation, how it is found within afterthoughts which means I don’t necessarily get that feeling of accomplishment right away. Everyone’s “WHY” looks different, so I encourage you to figure out what your “why” is and where your motivation comes from. Maybe even write it down somewhere visible so that when you are lacking that feeling, you can remember why you pretty much do anything in the first place. Remember, YOU are the only person getting in the way or your goals.

Creating habits can be a key component to following through with your routine and staying consistent in all aspects of your life. The great thing about habits is that they can be the smallest, almost unnoticeable adjustment in your daily life yet the impact that follows is huge.

For example, every morning when I wake up at 6am to start getting ready for work, I hop out of bed and go straight to the kitchen, no detours, for a glass of water. I know that sounds like a minuscule thing to do or a “habit” that you already have because you wake up thirsty. For me, I wanted to drink more water before I put any caffeine in my system, and so far I definitely feel more hydrated and I also noticed it’s been helping with bloating. Another habit I have been trying to form and one that seems almost impossible in this day in age, is to not look at my phone an hour after waking and an hour before I go to bed. I know I know, it sounds like I have emotional attachment issues from my phone but I think that is just the way that it is in society nowadays, glued to our phones. Anyways, social media is a whole other topic for another day, but what I am trying to say is that less screen time definitely decreases anxiety and increases positivity. I realized I do not want the first thing I see when I wake up in the morning and the last thing I see before falling asleep is a bright screen that honestly hurts my eyes, and is oftentimes filled with false information and highlight reels that can make me feel bad about myself. My mind goes 100 miles per hour when I am on social media or browsing the internet, but I have noticed I am much more relaxed when I use my phone minimally. I have time to stretch in the morning, take my time while getting ready, and pack my bag for the day whereas I would sometimes feel rushed in the past if I had spent too much time procrastinating on my phone.

I mentioned writing down your “why” can be helpful to stay on track and I think the same thing when trying to form habits. I just bought a new 2022 planner and it truly made me so happy because something about paper and planning out daily and weekly tasks brings me peace. Whether it’s a whiteboard, a scratch piece of paper, a note in your phone, or a sticky note, write down a few habits you want to work towards and even the steps you plan to take to get there. Having them somewhere visible as a reminder will be extremely helpful and keep you accountable, especially if they are somewhere that you will glance at every day to be reminded.

If you think writing out habits, your “why”, or what motivates you seems silly or not something you’re used to, think of all the lists that you do write out and why you write them. A grocery list isn’t useless because it’s helpful when you’re at the store and can’t remember if you need ketchup, just like a to-do list reminds you to pay bills and clean the kitchen. Writing down your goals is no different, it keeps you accountable and motivated whether it’s the smallest habit you want to start or a dream goal that you want to work towards.

YOU are the only person getting in the way of your goals. Remember that anytime you are doubting yourself or lack motivation. Future you will thank yourself when you see your goals become a reality!

2022: The Year of Health and Wellness

There is no better way to ring in the New Year than by bringing back our beloved Fit Bar blog posts. Although I felt that a break was necessary while dealing with the loss of someone who positively impacted not only Fit Bar, but a lot of people’s lives, I am feeling inspired and creativity inclined to spread the message of health to our readers.

I want to acknowledge Erwin for a minute, for those of you who did not know him, I was lucky enough to work beside him for over two years and let me just say, they were the best and most entertaining two years of my life! He radiated positivity and although I may not have known it when he was here on this Earth, Erwin has taught me to not worry about the opinions of others but to focus on myself and my happiness. Not only was he a smiling face for our customers to see daily, but he practiced what he preached when it came to health and wellness. Before an early 8am shift, and even after an eight hour summer shift where it was back to back orders all day, he always made time for the gym and his health. The most dedicated and lively soul, he motivated me back then and he will continue to inspire me forever. I refer to Erwin as our “Fit Bar angel” because I know that he is constantly watching over the cafe, making sure we are all taken care of. ♥

Let it be known that even though Christmas is over, and man did it fly by, the holiday spirit hasn’t died down just yet. Our health is something that we should constantly be working on, not just when it’s convenient or looked at as a trend. All of our supplements at the cafes are currently 20% off using our “Holiday20” discount code, typically this deal would only be valid through Christmas but we have decided to extend it! Since the first of the year is oftentimes a crucial first step in some of your health journeys, we want to help kick start them and offer the best supplements you can find at an unbeatable price. As a nutrition coach, I have learned that supplements should not be your number one priority when trying to change your diet, but they can be extremely beneficial when you incorporate them into your diet of mainly whole and nutritionally dense foods. Fit Bar is 100% focused on sourcing clean ingredients and foods that make you feel good and same goes for all of the products that we sell. The majority of our supplements are organic and all of the ingredients listed in each product are ones that we know of and know how beneficial they are to our health.

Organifi, LAIRD, Vital Proteins, Four Sigmatic, and SunWarrior are some of the supplements that are currently 20% off and happen to be some of the best out there! I have personally tried a product from every single one of these brands and definitely notice a difference when consuming them consistently. Organifi has a variety of supplements from “Green Juice” which is amazing for those who struggle with eating enough vegetables throughout the day, “Red Juice” which is packed with antioxidants and Vitamin C to fight off the million viruses going around right now. “Gold” is a combination of turmeric and ginger which also helps boost your immune system, and makes for the perfect winter drink when combined with hot water or milk. LAIRD is a mushroom packed powdered creamer that mixes so well in your morning coffee, afternoon latte, or even that hot chocolate nightcap. Vital Proteins are the supplements that we never knew we needed until we realized how amazing the benefits are. This specific brand is made of collagen peptides which are 100% protein amino acids that our bones, skin, hair, and joints all become stronger from, plus it can dissolve in just about anything. Medicinal mushrooms I know sound a little sketchy when you first hear the name, but I would say if you were to start with any new supplement, Four Sigmatic mushrooms would be perfect. We carry four different types of boxed mushrooms along with mushroom infused ground coffee, and even immune boosting drinks.

I think it is safe to say that Fit Bar is your one stop shop for all things HEALTH. Like I mentioned, health is oftentimes a trend and fades in and out as the seasons change but I encourage you all to make the changes in your life that will benefit your health. Whether that be eating more fruits and vegetables, going to the gym three times a week, getting outside for a walk to soak in some Vitamin D, or stopping by the Fit Bar cafe to fuel up with some supplements that will quite literally be life changing.! Whatever it may be, listen to your body and treat it as a temple because after all, we only get one body for the rest of our lives and it is up to us how we cherish it. HEALTH20 will get you 20% off any supplement purchased online through our website or in stores at any of our cafes.

Intentions

Our nature as humans is to always be wanting more, the newest item on the market, quick fixes with minimal work, high expectations, and fast results. As much as we don’t want to admit that, myself included, it is true which is why being intentional and patient in all aspects of my life is something that I have been working on and I encourage you all to do the same. I would consider myself an impatient person although I think I am okay at hiding my emotions, that usually means I am boiling on the inside. They say patience is a virtue and I have noticed just how true that saying is, especially as I get older and experience more of life.

You can’t change the people around you, the only thing you can change is YOUR own personal life because you are in control. I often wait around for answers to come to me but I realize that doesn’t get me the outcome that I am looking for, and most often there is no outcome, well because I am not actively doing my part. I notice this negative personal attribute in the small things, for example school, cooking, cleaning, working out, relationships, and even work. For starters, wouldn’t it be nice if homework did itself, I mean c’mon who doesn’t need some extra help with algebra. Time management and of course, patience is key for being successful and right now for me, success means the small things like getting an A on a test. Success looks different for everyone and I know we often forget that. I am currently taking summer classes and if for those of you who are unfamiliar with classes in the summer, the quarter itself is shrunken into about two months versus regular quarters that are spread out between three months. Anyways, this is where time management is extremely important to ensure that the workload is not unbearable. I mentioned being impatient but might I add, I am a little bit of a procrastinator about certain things and school is one of them. I let assignments hang over my head instead of getting them done so I have been actively trying to work on that and since switching my typical ways takes time, my patience is also expanding. So a small win for me this past week was practicing time management and prioritizing my assignments before they got ahead of me. Life is all about compromise so although I had less time to “relax” after work, completing my homework was satisfying and left me feeling relieved because there is nothing more relaxing than knowing you completed a task.

Health and wellness can also be tricky when it comes to prioritizing, even though it should be as simple as eating vegetables and working out right? WRONG. Putting nutrition and your health is somewhat challenging especially if it has been on the back burner for so long. Like I mentioned before, there are so many eye-catching products on the market or shiny new items that we all want to get our hands on, hoping it can fix some of our problems. As much as we would like to think that a specific supplement can help us lose those last 15 pounds, or one medication that will fix your mental health instantly, that is not the case. The challenges that we face as human beings in our day to day life, are typically ones that we need to continually work on every single day, even when we don’t feel like it. Mental health stems from all aspects of our daily routines that you may not realize including, the food that you eat (this is 100% number one), the people you surround yourself with, your relationships, daily movement and exercise, the shows you watch, and even the music you listen to. We are so quick to find that instant gratification to suppress those negative emotions, but have you ever stopped to think about your personal contribution? The time you spend meal prepping each week can be crucial for your health because the you that is dreading cooking and cleaning for two hours, is the same you that is thanking yourself when it’s late and you’re tired after work. You don’t have to worry about spending another second not relaxing because your meal is already made for you, and the same goes for those 10 minutes in the morning you take to stretch or meditate. Although it may be early and you’re feeling tired at that exact moment, you notice the difference throughout the day when things get stressful.

I guess that through this entire blog of me rambling on, what I am trying to say is that we should WANT to find the patience that will help ourselves in the long run. We should WANT to put in the work so that we can be our best selves for those around us and for what you have going on in your mind. It may take time, I still struggle every single day with being patient and not reaching for convenience, but making small switches every single day will leave you with a lasting result. And lasting results are not something that you are going to get with that 30 day detox you spent hundreds of dollars on because you wanted to get in shape, or with the to-do list that is now a mile long because you “don’t have time.” All we have in this world is time and I know that I would personally rather put in the work to make the most of it, instead of watching it pass by me wondering “what if.”
